Hello! My name is Avery Harper. I am a senior attending the Center of Advanced Research and Technology for my second year. I am currently in the Biotechnology Lab. This lab takes a different approach on learning by allowing students to get hands-on research experience. So far I have learned how to properly stain a slide, streak a petri dish, and use a microscope. I believe that this lab will prepare me for a future job in a research lab. I also really enjoy all the teachers and students who make the classroom a wonderful environment!
This week in Biotech, we have begun to learn about antibiotics and how they work. Our teachers have taught us that there are different characteristics of antibiotics. We have also talked about the differences between bacterial and viral infections, and how antibiotics would not help a person suffering from a viral disease. Along with learning about antibiotics, we have begun our research for showcase, in January. My team has decided to do our research on how the polio virus can be reengineered to treat brain cancers, like glioblastomas. We are very excited to learn more about it.
Our lab is very interactive and there is always something exciting to look forward to. The teachers are also very interactive with students and always willing to help. I would recommend this lab to anyone who enjoys working hands-on with lab equipment and also has a love for all things science.
