This Week At CART – Alana De La Cerda

Hello! I am Alana, a senior at CART in the Law and policy lab. We in the Law lab have recently begun our criminal justice unit, which I have been looking forward to all year. I have been learning about aspects of the criminal justice system- what is considered a crime, the different levels of crimes, etc. I am also taking my Economics and English class at CART. I appreciate that all three classes here are intersectional, meaning everything I learn in one subject is integrated into the other subjects.

Currently, in Economics we are learning about Behavioral Economics. This is a unique study of Economics that focuses on what drives a person to make certain decisions with their money. We have also learned about the types of Economies and the basics of how an economy works. We have been learning this through simulations, creating videos, and real-world examples. In my English class, we are studying Shakespeare, Hamlet specifically. Our teacher emphasizes the importance of creative and engaging ways to study Shakespeare, so we have been watching clips from different adaptations of the show and performing our own scenes for the class. At the end of this unit, the class will present a mock trial with one of the characters from Hamlet on trial. Everything that we have learned in English, Economics, and Law & Policy will be applied in this project. Of course, that is still a little ways away, and we still have a lot to learn.
