Katie Nix - Biomedicine Lab

Hello! My name is Katie Nix, and I am currently a senior at Buchanan High School. I am a second-year CART student and am currently enrolled in the Biomedicine Lab. Last year, I was in the Psychology and Human Behavior Lab, where I developed a strong foundation in understanding how people think and behave. Being at CART has taught me many valuable skills, including how to become a better student, a stronger leader, and a more effective team player. It has also helped me build confidence in myself and my abilities, especially when it comes to problem-solving and thinking critically about real-world situations.

This week at CART, in the Biomedicine Lab, we are beginning our muscle unit. In this unit, we will be learning about the structure and function of muscles, how they work together with other body systems to create movement, and how injuries or diseases can affect them. We also are exploring how muscles grow and repair, which connects closely to our understanding of overall health and wellness. Next week we will continue to work on this unit and incorporate some yoga with it!

At the same time, we are starting our nutrition unit, where we are focusing on how the foods we eat impact our bodies. We are learning how to make healthier choices, understand nutrients, and see how diet plays a role in energy, muscle development, and long-term health. This unit helps us connect science to our everyday lives, making it easier to apply what we learn both inside and outside of the classroom.

Another important focus this week is strengthening our research skills. I am learning how to search for credible and reliable scientific articles, especially experimental studies. This includes understanding how experiments are designed, identifying variables, and evaluating the validity of the results. I am also practicing revision by reviewing my work, making improvements, and learning how to clearly communicate scientific information. These skills are important not only for this class but also for future college and career opportunities.

Overall, CART has shaped me into being a better student and has prepared me for my future in being a nurse. CART is a wonderful school with so many different opportunities. With so many different pathways to take, I would recommend for everyone to go to CART.
