Biomedicine Students

We are Zara Habeeb, Mikayla Paredes, and Alyssa Huffman, and we are students in the Biomed lab from Clovis West! This week, we became BLS certified, which stands for Basic Life Support. BLS is a fundamental set of life-saving skills for emergencies that include CPR, airway management, and using an AED, all of which are crucial to maintaining a person’s life functions until advanced medical help arrives.

In order to obtain a certification, you must first take the BLS course, of course, and then pass a written test testing your knowledge on all the information you learned. Once you’ve passed the written exam, you must complete the physical skills test. For this, you must be able to perform CPR on both an adult and a baby, use a bag mask on a baby, as well as use an AED on an adult.

It was really cool to not just learn how to perform these procedures, but also to understand how they work and why we do them. Learning skills that are applicable to our daily lives makes these classes all the more engaging. We can’t wait to learn more in Biomed!
