Clovis, CA - February 12, 2003 - The Center for Advanced Research and Technology (CART), is being recognized as a Microsoft Center of Excellence and an innovator in its use of technology to enhance the teaching and learning process. The award is given to the Center for Advanced Research and Technology because the school has demonstrated leadership, long-term strategic IT infrastructure planning, teacher training programs and a commitment to providing a truly Connected Learning Community for their students and teachers. This year, Microsoft will select eight schools for the Centers of Excellence award, and provides the opportunity for these institutions to share lessons learned - best practices, and program solutions with other schools throughout the United States.
Steve Ward, COO, stated, "we are proud that the most recognized producer of software in the world has validated the educational strategies developed by our teaching staff. These strategies are leading to higher student achievement in addition to preparing our students for success in technology rich careers. These students will be prepared to take their place in the technology-based industries that are expanding in Fresno County."
CART teachers work hard to design curriculum that infuses core academic standards into business and industry projects, creating a seamless transition between school and the world of work and higher education. Teachers use powerful technology as a tool to engage and motivate students. CART has demonstrated that technology can empower students and teachers and help them reach the highest level of accomplishment.
As a Center of Excellence, CART will be highlighted on the Microsoft.com education website in March and will receive a Center of Excellence Recognition Kit that includes hardware and software.
"Microsoft is pleased to support the ongoing efforts of CART and their work in demonstrating that technology can empower students and teachers and help them to reach their full potential," said Mary Cullinane K-12 Segment Manager at Microsoft. "Technology has shown that when used appropriately, it provides educators and students with great tools to help students develop the skills necessary to become life long learners in the 21st century. There is no greater reward than seeing a child experience the awe of wonderment and the thrill of success."
CART (www.cart.org) is an innovative learning environment that enables juniors and seniors from the Fresno and Clovis Unified school districts to make connections with their future. Students utilize technology in 13 career focus areas to solve real world problems from their community under the mentorship of dedicated teachers and business partners. At CART, students are connected with a range of possibilities for the present and future as they become immersed in a program of continuous improvement and begin to regard education as an opportunity to think, learn, do, and most of all, "become" vital members of their communities.
